I learned from my mother how to love
the living, to have plenty of vases on hand
in case you have to rush to the hospital
with peonies cut from the lawn, black ants
still stuck to the buds. I learned to save jars
large enough to hold fruit salad for a whole
grieving household, to cube home-canned pears
and peaches, to slice through maroon grape skins
and flick out the sexual seeds with a knife point.
I learned to attend viewing even if I didn’t know
the deceased, to press the moist hands
of the living, to look in their eyes and offer
sympathy, as though I understood loss even then.
I learned that whatever we say means nothing,
what anyone will remember is that we came.
I learned to believe I had the power to ease
awful pains materially like an angel.
Like a doctor, I learned to create
from another’s suffering my own usefulness, and once
you know how to do this, you can never refuse.
To every house you enter, you must offer
healing: a chocolate cake you baked yourself,
the blessing of your voice, your chaste touch.
These days I was thinking a lot about all the things that I am thankful of. And this poem made me think over
my mom who taught me everything, since from the very beginning when I first learned how to walk. This poem expressed the very feeling that I had towards her. The very feelings I had filled with thankfulness and peace I had in her presence. I would always go up to her whenever I have a problem with a troubled relationships with my close friends. There is no one than my mom who knows exactly what I need. I love my mom!

Wow! I really like this poem. It's really sweet and it really makes me rethink the relationship between my mom and me. There are times when we have desagreements but ultimately its thanks to her I know how to live in this world and this poem reflects exactly how i feel. I think a lot of poeple will be able to relate to this poem which is why i think its so attractive.
yeah, this poem reminds me to think about my mothers. We always complain when we have struggles with our mothers, but this poem made me think that I was wrong. I really want to show this poem to my friends, so that they can rethink their relationships between their mothers and them. This poem touched me.
I love this poem, too! My mom is one of those people who can console others as well, this was a nice reminder of her.
